Araiza sings ten songs in German (by Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Liszt and Strauss), two in Russian and three in Italian, with clear diction throughout. His renditions are always musical and tasteful. This program was chosen for immediate accessibility, with such chestnuts as Tchaikovsky’s “Nur wer die Sehnsucht kennt” (also familiar as “None but the Lonely Heart”) and a vocal version of Liszt’s “Liebestraum” (both very beautifully sung). “Erlkönig” is slower than usual but very dramatic, with a touching ending. Schumann’s “Mondnacht” is sung very softly and very slowly, but the tone is somewhat thin instead of floaty, and Araiza avoids the discreet portamentos that give the melody its special grace. The effect, therefore, is more pedantic than poetic. “Freundliche Vision,” by Richard Strauss, on the other hand, is quite outstandingly well done and casts a lovely spell. Araiza’s stage presence is engaging. The audience obviously enjoyed the recital immensely.–Beaumont Glass
